Robotics – Control Over Control !!

Robots and humans futuristic technology concept with man and machine coming together and merging into one as a technological, social issue idea of human-computer engineering joining together with the intelligence of people.

What’s Robotics?
It’s the branch of technology which has incorporated many engineering fields in itself like mechanical-design, computer science, electronics etc. Robots interact with the physical world and amuse us, and these are simple machines which perform a task in an autonomous or semi-autonomous manner.
 It’s challenging task to generalize an opinion on robots. For some it would be a machine which can walk on two legs, for others it may be like, it should have the capability to think and act like humans. However, there is no general definition of this term. But I may have something for feeding over, according to me “A robot is a machine which can perform a task in a known environment under already set parameters”.
Any machine performing a task autonomously is a robot, like performing a task in industry, nanobots helping in the field of medical sciences, space robots and first robot Sophia to receive a citizenship of a country. They all are robots performing tasks in a controlled environment.
Since technology is playing a vital role in helping human work more efficiently, we can predict robots can take over many jobs. As the corporate world is also on the apex of entering the robotics world, let’s consider the pros and cons of this technology on the business world:-

However to me, robotics is a sign of the experiment which is being conducted on us, to incorporate humans with robots, are we fit for that environment?? So for answering that question, giving citizenship was one of the ways to impress our makers, now don’t get agitated by reading the last sentence cause we haven’t seen or met our makers, again it’s food for thought which many of us can’t digest. Now many of you may have a question regarding the mysteriously proximate text we have in our religious books, maybe that is the documentation by our makers left for us to follow a particular path.

Mechanical Design – A Crucial Ingredient for Robotics.


Robots are all the rage these days wherever you look around. They are being utilized in a number of sectors ranging from home to industrial to military purposes. The art of creating exquisite robots requires a collective effort of multidisciplinary teams working in tandem. This forms the basis of a new hot field of engineering in recent years named Robotics Engineering. So what is Robotics? Robotics is a branch of engineering involving the conception, design, manufacture, and operation of robots. This field overlaps with electronics, computer science, artificial intelligence, mechanical, nanotechnology and bioengineering. The body, shape and aesthetics of robots you see around is what comes from mechanical design which we will discuss in this blog.

Mechanical design is a powerful sub-field of mechanical engineering which brings out designs to life. Every object you are using or holding in your hands right now starts from designing. Research and development of innovative products consider this beautiful yet byzantine field as its heart and soul. To get an idea of how products enter the market and understand the importance of mechanical design, let’s look at a very popular process known as New Product Development (NPD). NPD, which is often referred to as The Stage-Gate innovation process, was developed by Dr. Robert G. Cooper as a result of comprehensive research on reasons why products succeed and why they fail.

How a concept becomes a reality?

Any new product starts with an idea, an inspiration to ease our lives. One idea is picked out of the lot after collecting and screening various ideas. The process of bringing this idea to reality is where the mechanical design comes into play. Mechanical design involves generating a 3D model of this idea into a working prototype and subsequently after various testing procedures into a final market product. Remove mechanical design from the NPD process and you realize you have no conceptual model in front of your eyes! You would not even have a physical model of the product you wish to bring to the market. I guess by now you must have noticed how crucial the mechanical design step is in a new product development process.

How CAD software and the right usage of it can transform your ideas to Life?

Mechanical design is an artistically beautiful yet challenging domain of mechanical engineering. It involves using your creative mind to its fullest to get the best possible product you can ever imagine. Good sketching abilities, being well versed with geometric shapes with its properties and excellent 3D imagination skills in your mind are the basis of designing. Any product you design begins with sketching on a paper before translating it to the 3D CAD software. Developing the ability to imagine 3D shapes and objects in your mind is essential to producing a good design fast and effectively. So how do you develop these skills? Start looking at your objects around you and study their shapes and structures. Imagine these objects being your head without actually looking at them. Imagine in your mind how a certain cross-section of this object would look. Once you develop this skill, the next part which is designing in a CAD software becomes much simpler.

Each action a robot performs is a mechanical mechanism at work. The most popular part of a robot is the arm which can perform tasks or pick objects.  The guiding force behind the arm movements is the use of mechanisms. Mechanical design remains a powerful yet undervalued part of a new product development system. It has the capability to make or break a company’s ambitions of bringing out their dream product into the market. The very thought of this should be inspiring for new graduates to take up mechanical design as their career paths. Are Robots replacing humans??

Humans are complex beings with emotions, brains, and cognition that make them a lot different from robots. However, we do not require humans to fix screws, work as firefighters, clean the dirt or defuse bombs (which are dangerous to our lives). Instead, robots replace these jobs to secure our lives.

In my perception robots are rather enhancing humanity through the simplest reason: Robots are controlled by humans and they will continue to be the slaves of their masters.

The history is a proof that if humans use the technology in the right way, then technology has always been a boon to humanity right from its existence! Let’s get back to that era of human messengers used to move across large areas on foot and running to send messages from one land to the other. Later, wheels, one of the finest inventions in the history of human life, were introduced. Clearly, the invention did take away a lot of jobs as one person alone could now easily and efficiently travel larger distances on a vehicle and deliver hundreds of messages as compared to the earlier scenario where 100 messengers were required to deliver 100 messages, and that was highly time consuming. But the question is, after losing jobs, do you think messengers did nothing? They must not have quit but rather must have done something and that something would have created more jobs for them.

In a similar way, robots are not taking the humans jobs they are encouraging humans to perform task that a robot can’t! Task like creating seamless software, develop life changing solutions, introduce humanity to the products which just makes our lives better and many more responsibilities like this where a robot simply can’t take any charge. Well, its time now to jump into this technology towards robotics to make our lives better and I’m into it.

Robots: A hardware or software

Robot is the most ubiquitous word in daily literature for past few decades; while growing up like all 1980’s born I thought robot as same metal body structure which performs task automatically and support my thought movies like Bicentennial Man, Short Circuit, Terminator 2, etc., made me believe in it. In fact it fascinated to that extent that I started to dream about robotics as my career. Now that I am in robotics and its allied fields for nearly a decade. I thought to compile my thoughts that is robotics really is a hardware or software entity.

If I look into the past of the medieval era one of the most influential figure in history with respect to science was the great genius Leonardo Da Vinci. He was the man who was way head of his times and he left no stones unturned in robotics too, where he came up with mechanical humanoid known as Vitruian Man performing the role of mechanical knight. Even though not much is known about Vitruian Man some NASA scientist claimed it could walk, sit and move jobs like humans.

In the last century, robotics was no different with the metal frames, but it was just clubbed with chips and integrated circuits. The biggest difference here is there control of the robots is done with the help of software programmed to do the specialized task assigned to the robot.

Now presently every person has robots in there pockets, lets assume a simple voice assistant with your mobile phones be Siri/OK Google, when a user ask certain questions to these software apps it replies back with suitable answer as best example of soft bots.

Be any ages we are always surrounded by robots. In my opinion robots can be hardware, software or both. To bottom line the dilemma of robot being a hardware or a software, I would rather go to the epistemology of the word robot which derived from from the Slavic decent word ‘robota’ which means a forced labor whose sole purpose is to serve his master, this make find a synonym robot to control system.
